Upcoming Anime in the Winter 2021 Season

As we press on to the new year, we’re greeted by a slew of new anime announcements. Sure, this post might come in a bit late, but I don’t typically watch a series until it’s done airing so I can binge watch it (I’d rather wait for the whole season to finish than wait a week for the next episode, fuck cliffhangers), so it’s fiiiiiiiiine. Anywho, in addition to a lot of fantasy anime, and a surfing anime (neat and unusual, but not sure if that’d really be up my alley), there are a handful of anime I’m really excited for. I’ll try to keep this short, and make posts for each later if they’re awesome. Or terrible, betraying my expectations and leaving me questioning life. But hopefully the former.

Re:Zero – Starting Life in Another World, Season 2

One of the more well-paced and developed isekai anime I’ve checked out, Re:Zero has been a standout anime. I am pumped that it’s getting a second season, and is very much deserved. Looks like we’ll get to see more Emilia, who wasn’t developed as much as expected in the first season. Not that I’m complaining about spending a large chunk of time with Rem (my favorite girl, honestly). Either way, looking forward to more of this series.

Dr. Stone: Stone Wars

Season 2 of Dr. Stone should be great. Season 1 kept me engaged throughout, even if the scientific part of me had issue with it (bit too simplified and unrealistic, but it’s an anime, so fuck that part of my mind). I haven’t been keeping up with the manga, so I’m in the dark about what’s coming in this season, but I’ve heard it’s a great arc. Pair a great arc with an already good series and we should be in for a treat.

The Promised Neverland, Season 2

The first season of this series literally ended as the plot took off, so this is much appreciated. That being said, I do have some reservations with the direction it may take. Usually, when a series starts off with high suspense tied to close quarters, it degrades a bit when the constraints are released. I’m sure they’ll find a way to keep us on edge, but I suspect it’ll be a bit different than season 1. Only time will tell, though I have high hopes for it.

Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation

This series. I’ve been waiting so long for this. I’ve been following the manga closely (haven’t checked out the light novels yet), and is probably one of my favorite isekai series I’ve read to date. I remember when they announced they were getting an anime in the manga, I was ecstatic. I really hope they don’t drop the ball on this one. I’m curious how far into the manga it’ll go, as I wouldn’t say the series progressed at the speed of light (in a good way, mind you), but there’s also a concern that they’ll glaze over the early chapters which is almost never a good thing. Here’s to hoping they do it justice.

Some quick honorary mentions, Log Horizon season 3 could be good, but I’m a bit on the fence. Also, not my favorite series by any stretch of the imagination, but Yami Shibai season 8 is cool. If you haven’t checked it out, Yami Shibai has a unique art style, and is basically quick stories of Japanese folklore horror.

So there you go, a list of series coming out this season I’m looking forward to most. I can’t wait for them to complete so I can binge to my heart’s content. There’s a few other series that look like they could be intriguing as well, so I’m excited to see which of these are a diamond in the rough. Hopefully that was short enough, don’t want to bore you, nor keep you from watching some anime.
